Fluxblog #348: 2021 Survey Playlist
Plus a nice chat with Daniel Ralston about Iron Butterfly, bartending, and Malibu
The FLUXBLOG 2021 SURVEY MIX is here! [Spotify | Apple]
This is a playlist covering music from across genres through the year, and is ideally consumed as either a time capsule in the future, or as a way of catching up on everything you might have missed right now. It is very thorough but inevitably will be missing something or other – the sheer volume of music released now is so overwhelming that even at 1000 songs this won’t tell the whole story.
I don’t recommend shuffling this playlist – I swear this is all pretty carefully sequenced, at least through 700 or so, and then it’s kinda “there be dragons” – but I do encourage skipping around and clicking on things that might be interesting to you. It’s really too bad Spotify and Apple don’t let you bookmark a place in a playlist, as it would be helpful with something this huge.
Please do send this playlist along to anyone you think might appreciate it. You can literally forward this email to them, it’s just that easy!
You can find similar survey playlists for every year from 1965-present on my Spotify and Apple profiles. If this playlist is a bit too overwhelming and diverse for you, stay tuned – I’ll be offering a few more aesthetically focused 2021 playlists soon, and you can already check out 2021: The Year K-Pop Broke on Spotify, Apple, and YouTube.
My personal tradition is that after I drop the year’s survey mix I take the week off from writing regular posts, so there’s none of those this week. But I do have a new episode of Fluxpod for you featuring my old friend Daniel Ralston, who talks about his forthcoming podcast investigating the baffling disappearance of a former member of Iron Butterfly and his experiences as a bartender in Malibu. You can find the episode on all podcast platforms and the Fluxblog Patreon, where there’s also a subscriber exclusive episode featuring an interview I recorded with Hot Chip about ten years ago.

• I loved this episode of Broken Record featuring Faye Webster, who is just really cool and talks a lot about her process and work habits.
• Ted Leo has a new song on Bandcamp and the money will all go to the Frontera Fund and Jane’s Due Process. You can read more about the song and the benefit drive on Ted’s site.
