Fluxblog 371: All Playlists Everything
90s alt-rock, indie, and dance music, plus some late 00s indie for good measure
I took this week off from writing and making new playlists to alleviate some burnout, but in the meantime I’ve created some new YouTube versions of some of my most popular old playlists.
A new season of Fluxpod episodes will start in early June! I’m going to be running 10-12 free episodes available on all podcast platforms, starting with an episode featuring Tom Scharpling of the Best Show. Subscribe now if you haven’t already!
WHAT WAS ALT-ROCK? 1991-1996 now exists as a YouTube playlist entirely comprised of music videos alongside vintage MTV promos to really sell that “you are a teenager watching MTV in that era” vibe. [YouTube | Spotify | Apple]
The twin sibling of that playlist is WHAT WAS INDIE ROCK? 1991-1996, which covers a parallel development in styles in that era. The broad concept for these two playlists was to put forth the idea that alt-rock and indie rock in this period could be understood as actual genres with distinct conventions. 100% PURE LOVE: DANCE POP 1991-1995 covers a very different side of music in the same era, featuring some of the best dance hits of the early to mid 90s alongside some club hits and deep cuts. The YouTube version of this playlist also features a lot of vintage MTV promos! [YouTube | Spotify | Apple]
And for all the prime Millennials here’s THE NEW INDIE 2008-2010, covering a major sea change in indie aesthetics that’s for the most part a world away from what’s on the 1991-1996 playlist. The YouTube version has a slightly different track listing so this could be entirely comprised of music videos and professionally filmed performances. [Spotify | Apple | YouTube]
